Arnold's Story: April 19, 1949

For the first time Arnold sends a typed letter to his family. Among other things, he plans to take his National Board exams in September and needs to review quite a bit ahead of time so he will stay and work in Boston over the summer instead of going to McCloud for seasonal employment.

Mrs. Underwood was Ethel van Wagoner Underwood, wife of missionary and educator Horace Horton Underwood, who was assassinated by communist terrorists while hosting a Faculty Women's Club meeting in her home. She had an enormous correspondence, among whom was Arnold. He never met her in person but did correspond with her, and she in turn encouraged his desire to become a medical missionary.

Arnold's Story: December 25, 1946

I recognize these ceramic horses, but I do not know the story behind them. They may been purchased in Korea. And perhaps they were a Christmas gift. I remember them from our home in Gainesville, Florida, but I have no recollection of when I first saw them — from before my grandmother, Hazel Nevis, died in 1973, or after? My parents always kept them wrapped in tissue in a box and they were never on display in our house. I recall that a few were missing limbs after a while, and I lost track of them after we cleaned out the house when my mother moved to assisted living.

Arnold's Story: December 18, 1946 Arnold, Mary and Little Mary

The Christmas card is likely from Arnold, his wife Mary and their infant daughter Little Mary.

Arnold's Story: September 15, 1946

I have no more letters from Arnold in Korea for the rest of 1946. Subsequent correspondence will be from California, after he was sent home on terminal leave in August 1946 and demobilized on September 15. Here I post the rest of Arnold's photos from 1946 (either Korea or Japan) as well as his certificate of service and separation.

From the details of this certificate, we see that he got a lapel button and a few medals: Army Occupation medal (Japan), American Campaign Medal World War II, Victory Medal, and Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. After our parents died, we divvied these medals up amongst us four brothers, Arnold's sons.

Arnold's Story: May 26, 1946

On May 26, 1946, Arnold writes to his parents with photos of Korea and Koreans. I included scans of the backs of the photos because they had Arnold's comments and descriptions. He is later sent home on terminal leave starting August 7, 1946, as he calculates, and officially demobilized in mid September.
