Arnold's Story: May 1951

The Boylston Medical Society Catalogue of May 1951 shows Arnold as a member of the class of 1951 and as having presented a paper "Cell Structures in Relation to Function" to the Society.

Arnold's Story: October 11, 1950

Jan plays around with Arnold's name, calling him Harnie. She does something similar with Harvard–Army (Arvard–Harmy).

Arnold's Story: September 28, 1950

Apparently Jan Schuck missed seeing Arnold in Boston on his return from Newfoundland. She recently hiked Mt. Washington in New Hampshire with Ruth and Clem in a blizzard.

St. Anthony is a town on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland.

Arnold's Story: September 17, 1950

Tor Richter, another classmate from Harvard Medical School, writes Arnold with news from his class at Harvard Medical School. Some new names show up now: Al Skinner, Sarah, Bill Manson, Rutch, Al Damon, Marv Gordon, and Dave and Frances and Donald.

Arnold is now deciding whether he should pursue medical research or stick with his original plan to become a medical missionary in Korea.

Arnold's Story: September 14, 1950

Arnold, Clem Hiebert and Jerry Foster wrote up their summer work in Twillingate as a report to the Public Health Department. The other medical students were impressed that Arnold was able to take over the Lewisporte, Newfoundland, practice as a substitute doctor while their main doctor was on leave or vacation.

Arnold's Story: September 5, 1950

Jan Schuck writes Arnold about her experiences flying from Twillingate to Gander and returning to Boston. Clem Hiebert, Jerry Foster, Jan, and Ruth departed at the beginning of September, leaving Arnold behind for another four weeks. Ruth here may be the future wife of Jerry Foster.

The Norseman was a Canadian single-engine airplane designed to handle unimproved surfaces and land and take off on water. Apparently as Jan and the others landed in Gander, the airplane caught on fire and Jerry Foster put it out with an extinguisher.

Arnold's Story: July 1950 Newfoundland

Arnold arrived in Twillingate, Newfoundland, Canada, at the beginning of July 1950. Twillingate is off the northeastern shore of the island.

Here are some of his postcards. They all had unfranked Newfoundland stamps on the back but I only scanned the one back side. Newfoundland was a separate Dominion from Canada in the British Commonwealth until 1949, when it joined the Dominion of Canada. They issued their own stamps through 1949. This two-cent stamp of King George VI may have been issued as early as 1938.

Arnold related an incident from a home visit where his colleague Clem Hiebert delivered a baby in Newfoundland. The family requested some grace. Somewhat surprised, he happily said a prayer for the baby. The family thanked him for the prayer, but again requested grace. Finally he came to understand they were saying grease, but it sounded like grace to him; he offered some ointment for the new-born baby. In Clem's book Seldom Come By: A Surgeon's Stories, 2003, that delivery was actually of twins.

This two-cent stamp with King George VI was issued in or after 1938 by the Dominion of Newfoundland
and certainly before it entered into confederation with Canada in 1949 when NFL stopped issuing stamps.

Decades later Clem Hiebert wrote of his residency experiences in Newfoundland, when he, Jerry Foster and Arnold interned at Notre Dame Bay Memorial Hospital in Twillingate under Dr. John Olds for two–three months.

Arnold's Story: April 14, 1950

Bill mailed that letter and check late in the day on Wednesday, April 12th, and it has already arrived on Friday, April 14th.

Arnold had planned for a clerkship at the University of California, Berkeley, but now decides to do an internship at a hospital in Twillingate, Newfoundland, Canada. He thinks it will prepare him better to become a medical missionary in Korea. The extra money he saves flying coach instead of deluxe about $90 in 1950 (about $1000 in 2021) will cover his expenses in Newfoundland for three months.
