Bill, Hazel and Laura take the train from Los Angeles to San Francisco and then on to the East Coast. They might have taken the Southern Pacific Daylight from Los Angeles along the coast to San Francisco. Then from San Francisco they would have caught a ferry across the San Francisco Bay to Oakland, where they would board the California Zephyr to Chicago and then another train to Boston. The Zephyr featured the Vista-Dome for excellent views of the scenery.
