Arnold and Newlin: Road Trip West 1965, Mesa Verde and the Rockies

Arnie and Newlin take their sons to Mesa Verde National Park and traversing the Rockies they encounter snow remaining from the winter and spring.

It was the boys' first time to encounter snow; sure enough, they slipped and slid on their backsides, getting their pants wet.

Arnold and Newlin: 1955 winter snow

In January 1955 Newlin's sister Sheryl arrived from Florida with her son Bucky to assist Newlin after the birth of Eddie's brother Allan. The photo show the MIT Solar House in the background.

The woman in this photo vaguely resembles Arnie's mother Hazel Nevis,
but I have no record of her visiting Arnie and his family in 1955,
so I suspect she is a fellow church member or distant family from the area

Arnold's Story: April 1, 1949

The Cottage Hospital is a not-for-profit care center in Santa Barbara.

The snow storm they got into between Hanford and Glendale was very likely in the Transverse Ranges, what Californians now call "the Grape Vine" for a stretch of Interstate 5 cutting through the Tejon Pass between the Tehachapi Mountains and the San Emigdio Mountains. In 1949 that would have been State Route 99 (also known at one point as US 99).

This was an empty envelope. Perhaps Hazel had sent other mail inside it, though normally she just forwarded any mail since it would already have been stamped. Or maybe she sent a check.

Arnold's Story: January 11, 1949

A rare snow fell in Los Angeles and Southern California over several days January 9 through 12, 1949. Here are two family photos from their home in Glendale.

Television parties are evidently now popular. In the 1940s televisions were not all that common in American homes, but they were clearly a growing trend.

Arnold's Story: 1945 misc

I discovered this letter a bit late to place in order for 1945. The envelope shows it is from Arnold's Boston days and seems to describe activities from his lumberjack time in northern California.

Here is a July 12, 1945, envelope from Harry Schmidt, whose contents I could not find, but the envelope shows Arnold now six or seven hours up the road from Glendale at Camp Pinedale, Fresno. (I lived about a half mile from there between 1990 and 1995 when I taught at California State University Fresno, a factoid I just calculated right now.)

I am not sure who Eva is, but here is an undated photo and note from here. The ranch she mentions might be the Elmer's logging camp; that is of course a complete guess on my part. The photo and note  may be from a year or two earlier.
