Arnold and Newlin: Gainesville 1972

Newlin's sister Floreine Ashmore Marshall (later Floreine Langston, when she remarried) lived in Gainesville during the 1960s and came to the house countless times. Here she joins us in Westside Park, two blocks from our house on 11th Avenue.

Flo smoked in those years, and here she is sitting outside enjoying a cigarette with some birthday cake. But she quit smoking in the mid 1960s after the school system rolled out an anti-smoking campaign. We kids would see Aunt Flo smoking and ask if she knew that for every minute smoking it was a minute off her life.

We did not attend cousin Martha Gail's wedding, but Aunt Eloise made sure we got a photo from it.

Arnold and Newlin: Easter in Sweden 1970

Arnie's youngest sister Laura flew from Los Angeles to Sweden with their nephew Walter (Leonard and Lucille's son) for a few weeks at Easter time. Easter fell on March 29 and it was still winter in Scandinavia. Laura was impressed that it was still a snowy winter in Sweden at the end of March and laughed about her "Easter bonnet".

We went several times to Drottningholm Palace, now the residence of the royal family in its west wing. After Ester we brought Laura and Walter there.

Newlin discovered the delights of fondue in 1970, but it appears here that we have started with a hearty split pea soup for dinner:

The family gathered around the fondue pot

We visited Stockholm after Easter with Laura and Walter. Among the sites we went to the Wasa Ship Museum, where the Swedish warship Wasa was housed. It sank in 1628 and was salvaged in 1961. Because the centuries old ship would have deteriorated if allowed to dry out, it was impregnated with polyethylene glycol by spraying it over the course of seventeen years.
