Apparently Jan Schuck missed seeing Arnold in Boston on his return from Newfoundland. She recently hiked Mt. Washington in New Hampshire with Ruth and Clem in a blizzard.

St. Anthony is a town on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland.

Arnold's Story: September 26, 1950

Hazel updates Arnold with some family news. They enjoyed sailing on Leonard's boat at Balboa Island, Newport Beach

In the 1970s we visited Leonard's family and went sailing on his boat at Newport Beach. I don't know if it was the same boat or a newer one, but by then he had bought a small house to spend the weekend in.

Tor Richter, another classmate from Harvard Medical School, writes Arnold with news from his class at Harvard Medical School. Some new names show up now: Al Skinner, Sarah, Bill Manson, Rutch, Al Damon, Marv Gordon, and Dave and Frances and Donald.

Arnold is now deciding whether he should pursue medical research or stick with his original plan to become a medical missionary in Korea.

Arnold's Story: September 14, 1950

Arnold, Clem Hiebert and Jerry Foster wrote up their summer work in Twillingate as a report to the Public Health Department. The other medical students were impressed that Arnold was able to take over the Lewisporte, Newfoundland, practice as a substitute doctor while their main doctor was on leave or vacation.

Jan Schuck writes Arnold about her experiences flying from Twillingate to Gander and returning to Boston. Clem Hiebert, Jerry Foster, Jan, and Ruth departed at the beginning of September, leaving Arnold behind for another four weeks. Ruth here may be the future wife of Jerry Foster.

The Norseman was a Canadian single-engine airplane designed to handle unimproved surfaces and land and take off on water. Apparently as Jan and the others landed in Gander, the airplane caught on fire and Jerry Foster put it out with an extinguisher.

Hazel writes Arnold with family news — Bill and Mary Ann visiting Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara for checkups (both have diabetes), Tom and Alice Madruga visiting with their three daughters, Pat quitting her job, and Leonard having two weeks off after his final exams.
