Arnold's Story: July – August, 1947

In July and August, 1947, Arnold is back working at the McCloud River Lumber Company. Here are his deduction receipts for board and bunk, unemployment insurance, and federal income tax. The "U.S. Old Age Tax" is what we now call Social Security.

Arnold's Story: June 13, 1947

Arnold's Caltech graduation announcement and commencement program from June 1947. He graduated with a bachelors in Physics. The class should have graduated during World War II (1944–1945) but the ceremony was delayed on account of the large number of graduates serving in the military during the war.

Arnold's Story: February 3, 1947

Arnold never wavered in his plan to become a Presbyterian medical missionary, and here we see a receipt from Harvard Medical School. Perhaps it is an application fee since he does not graduate from Caltech until June 1947.

Arnold's Story: January 1, 1947

Bill and Hazel Nevis always bought their family grandstand seats for the Parade of Roses. Here are photos from the 1947 parade, the first parade to be televised.

Arnold's Story: circa 1947

I was not going to include these scribblings with spellings as they add little of interest to this blog, but there is a list of names on one of them. I am not even sure of the date — these were in a parcel of letters dated 1947. The Vanderbilt Hall in the text of the card suggests it is the medical school residence of Harvard Medical School, as Arnold had started there in the autumn of 1947.

Arnold's Story: December 25, 1946

I recognize these ceramic horses, but I do not know the story behind them. They may been purchased in Korea. And perhaps they were a Christmas gift. I remember them from our home in Gainesville, Florida, but I have no recollection of when I first saw them — from before my grandmother, Hazel Nevis, died in 1973, or after? My parents always kept them wrapped in tissue in a box and they were never on display in our house. I recall that a few were missing limbs after a while, and I lost track of them after we cleaned out the house when my mother moved to assisted living.
