Arnold's Story: December 14, 1944

Hazel writes again with family and neighborhood news. I am not sure who Dolly's Johnny is. She gets married during the war, but to a guys named Lee, not Johnny. The Apostle mentioned in the post script may be a 1943 work by  Sholem Asch.

From Dolly's letter, we see that Hazel is home after her operation and being tended to by a private nurse, who turns out to be the mother of a friend (or classmate) of theirs.

Arnold's Story: November 19, 1944 Arnold

Arnold is finishing his training at Harvard and preparing to start at MIT. He and his friend Jim McDade went to North Boston to visit the neighborhood where his father, William Nevis, was born and spent a few early years before the Nevis family moved to Central California.

Arnold was enthusiastic about the 1944 biographical film Wilson, about former President Woodrow Wilsondirected by Henry King and starring Charles Coburn and Alexander Knox, among others.

The building is 21 Charter Street, Boston, Massachusetts. It would have been a fairly new building at the time of Bill's birth in 1890.

And the neighborhood is this:

Arnold's Story: November 9, 1944 Dolly

I am not sure what kind of operation Hazel Nevis had. She had had cancer once (and an autopsy reveal a recurrence at the time of death, but not a cause) so perhaps this is what the procedure was about.

Arnold's Story: October 27, 1944

A letter with news from the Nevis clan in the Central Valley of California:

I believe the relatives cited here are Edwin Mello, Hazel Mello, Helen Mello, Katherine (Catherine) Mello, Edwin and sister's father Manuel Mello, and Bill Nevis's sisters Mary Madruga and Mary Ann Silva. Hanford is where Bill grew up on the various family farms: first in his parents' household, then in two of his sisters' homes, and also on a neighbor's farm (after he ran away from his brothers-in-law).
