Arnold and Newlin: Gainesville 1971

By September 1971 we are back home in Gainesville. We brought back the Volvo from Sweden and bought a second car, a station wagon. We did not have that second car long; on a road trip to see Newlin's brother Durrent and his family in Montgomery, Alabama, we were hit head-on by a drunk driver in Georgia. When the station wagon was repaired it did not align correctly and Arnie rejected it to replace it with a Buick sedan.

Due to departmental politics in Neurology, Arnie changed from University of Florida Medical Center to the Department of Physics (which he shared with the College of Engineering) in 1971

Arnold and Newlin: Whittier 1967

Bill and Hazel decide that their multi level house in Glendale is no longer easy for them to scale the many stairs (seven levels, according to Newlin), so they sell it and move to Whittier, where Leonard and Lucille already live in their mountain-side home. (Before selling the house in Glendale, Bill subdivides the two lots and builds a contemporary house on the former grove side in very close proximity to the existing mission-style house. He assists the buyer with financing, but that guy eventually cannot make the payments, so Bill reacquires the title and sells it again.)

The new place was planted with a ground cover of oxalis in the front and back yards in lieu of grass. It was a good choice for California since it does not need to be mowed frequently like grass, but it was a surprise to Joel seeing a Florida weed valued as a California lawn. The only negative with oxalis was that all footprints showed in the oxalis, though I suppose it would have been easy to follow a prowler's footsteps.

Arnold and Newlin: 1960 Los Angeles

Although these photos are stamped May 1961 and June 1962, they probably date from 1960, before Arnold and Newlin left California for Florida, and just developed later. Newlin is pregnant with Andrew in the following shot, but he was not born until September 1960. The location of the first set of photos is likely Knott's Berry Farm, an attraction in Buena Park, California. The second set are in the back yard of their rental in Westwood, near UCLA. And the last set are at Bill and Hazel's house in Glendale.

Arnold and Newlin: 1959

Newlin said they had to get on with life quickly after Eddie's death because they had two young highly active sons not pausing their growth to mourning the loss of their brother. Joel was barely a year old and Allan was three and a half.

This next is Leonard's son (Arnie's nephew) Walter from Leonard's second wife Lucille.

In the summer of 1959 Arnie and Newlin drove to Florida to visit Newlin's family. On the drive back, Newlin's two nieces Linda Langston and Elise Ferrell accompanied them. Linda and Elise experience their first Mexican food in Texas. Also in Texas, Arnie took Linda and Elise to an Elvis concert. On the road trip the family saw attractions such as the Petrified Forest National Park. In California, they visited a mission or two as well as Disneyland.

In California they visited the Santa Barbara Mission along with Arnie's sister Laura.

Relaxing at home in the Nevis apartment in Westwood, Joel observed the adults eating potato chips with dip; not quite getting the dip concept, he shoved one in Linda's mouth with toothpaste on it.
