Arnold and Newlin: Road Trip Out West 1972

We camped our way out West, picnicking instead of eating in restaurants and saving money from motels. In west Texas a strong wind storm bent and broke a tent support rod in the large of the two tents, and Arnie could not repair it until we got to Whittier, so we stayed the next few nights in motels, enjoying refreshing swimming pools.

We returned to Florida on a northern route that took us through Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons. In Yellowstone we bumped into the Collins family, close friends from our neighborhood. We knew that our routes might overlap but we had expected to be weeks apart so it was a surprise when we arrived later than anticipated and they arrived earlier to meet up at the visitor center.
