Arnold and Newlin: Rome, September 1961

Arnie always woke up early, and was excited to explore the streets of places he visited. Rome was no exception, so many of these slides were early morning images, others from day-time tours.

Arnold and Newlin: September 7, 1961

Arnie enjoys every place he visits and promises to return with Newlin. He keeps his promise with regard to Munich, which Arnie and Newlin visit in May 1970 with their sons and Arnie's mother Hazel.

Arnie frequently notes how inexpensive Europe is, and it continued to be for a decade. In the Sixties and early Seventies there used to be a lot of travel guides for Europe on $5 a day. Arnie stay is slightly more than that price but he is staying in much better hotels than student backpackers.

Arnie describes his trip and a large reception at the Munich City Hall:

Arnold and Newlin: September 2, 1961

A letter and two postcards from Arnie to Newlin and the boys on Saturday, September 2, 1961. Arnie flew from Gainesville to Imeson Airport in Jacksonville and then to Newark, New Jersey, where due to a delay he missed a helicopter ride across New York Harbor to LaGuarida Airport, instead taking a small plane to New York International Airport for a KLM flight to Schipol. He met a number of colleagues and friends of acquaintances on the flights as Gainesville was a small city in 1961 (about 65,000).
