A letter with news from the Nevis clan in the Central Valley of California:

I believe the relatives cited here are Edwin Mello, Hazel Mello, Helen Mello, Katherine (Catherine) Mello, Edwin and sister's father Manuel Mello, and Bill Nevis's sisters Mary Madruga and Mary Ann Silva. Hanford is where Bill grew up on the various family farms: first in his parents' household, then in two of his sisters' homes, and also on a neighbor's farm (after he ran away from his brothers-in-law).

When Elmer Hall says "second civil", I am not sure what he references; a second lieutenant is a commissioned office in the Marines, so not really a civilian. WAVES are women volunteers in the U.S. Navy (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) and BAMs are the Marine Corps equivalent (a crude acronym for Broad-Assed Marines).

Some fifteen months after he enrolled in the Army, Arnold received a parchment certificate from the City of Glendale, California, honoring his enrollment.

Amelia Bettencourt Hyer is Bill Nevis's niece and Burnett is her husband. Tommy could be Bill's brother-in-law, Tom Bettencourt.
