Arnold writes from Korea. His father, Bill Nevis, has now purchased a building in downtown Los Angeles (but later he lost it to eminent domain for the LA convention center). And Leonard does indeed go to New York City to launch an East Coast branch of the family accounting company. Arnie had announced already at age 16 that he did intend to join the family firm (a bit of a family scandal when he stood up at the dinner table to state his case emotionally). And his ambition to continue his education is clear in this letter.
From the return address on the envelope, we see Arnold is in the 56th Fighter Control Squadron, which moved to Tachikawa Airfield after the surrender of Japan in World War II, where it participated in the military occupation of Japan until deactivation in 1946. Clearly this squadron was in Korea as well, setting up radar stations.
