Arnold and Newlin: September 20, 1953

John Edward "Eddie" was born Sunday, September 20, 1953. He was born via caesarean section, as were all of Newlin's subsequent four children. Arnold called his mother-in-law Nursie Whaley Ashmore the same day and she wrote a letter that evening, mailing it the next day.

The Boston Lying-In Hospital is now Brigham and Women's Hospital, but Newlin's room reservation was for Richardson House (now the Fisher–Richardson House).

In May Newlin's obstetrician arranged a room at Boston Lying-In Hospital's Richardson House in Mansfield, Massachusetts

the envelope is addressed by Nursie's daughter (Newlin's sister) Floreine, who had distinctive handwriting

Blanche Whaley Howell was Nursie's brother's daughter (and Gordon was Blanche's husband). Gordon was stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941, and therefore Blanche was in Honolulu during the attack. Oh her return to the continent, she was told not to speak of it, to prevent home front morale from plummeting.

Arnold and Newlin: New England 1952–1953

It appears that Arnie and Newlin now have a car (or have borrowed one) and they make some trips around New England. Newlin is working as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. Arnold is a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Arnold and Newlin: Life in Boston 1952

After they wed in Florida, Arnie and Newlin move to Boston, where Arnie is in graduate school at the Massachusetts of Technology and Newlin takes a job as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. Their taxes get a bit complicated having worked in three states: California, Florida and Massachusetts. At first they live in quarters at 100 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Arnie took a risk with this next photo. He was afraid the developer would refuse it for being pornographic or worse, turn him in to the authorities for pornography.
