Arnold's Story: January 11, 1949

A rare snow fell in Los Angeles and Southern California over several days January 9 through 12, 1949. Here are two family photos from their home in Glendale.

Television parties are evidently now popular. In the 1940s televisions were not all that common in American homes, but they were clearly a growing trend.

Hazel writes about their Christmas and New Year's activities and the exchange of Christmas presents. With their new television aerial, they have much better reception and can enjoy more options and better quality images for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day programming, including the Tournament of Roses parade and football game. Various friends and family visited as well. The 'Valley' refers to the San Joaquin Valley, where most of the Nevis relatives still live.

Arnold is now back at Harvard Medical School after a summer job in northern California and a visit to his family in southern California. At least three letters are missing from Arnold's cache of correspondence, considering what he says in this letter.

Arnold's Story: September 23, 1948

This letter is mistakenly date September 23, when it is clearly written on August 23 (as seen on the postmark). The contents fit well in the August correspondence about sending books, leaving McCloud on September 10, a friend's visit, and Leonard and Pat coming home to Glendale.

Arnold's Story: September 1, 1948

September 1 brings another premium notice from the Veterans Administration National Service Life Insurance and a letter from father to son. Bill plans to take the Streamliner luxury service from Los Angeles to Chicago for a convention and then onto New York to check up on the Ideal System Company's East Coast office, but he asks Arnold to drop in for an unplanned visit to see how things really are.

"Aunt Be" and "Uncle Dave" might be relatives of Leonard's wife Pat.

Tilford's was a new restaurant in Los Angeles; they say it opened to the public in 1949, but from this letter in 1948 at least their catering was in service for Genevieve's wedding.
