Arnold and Newlin: West and East Berlin 1973

Arnie and Newlin cross from West Berlin to East Berlin via Checkpoint Charlie, a famous symbol of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the U.S. In East Berlin they see the ruins of the bombed out French Church of Friedrichstadt (the so-called French Cathedral), which was not rebuilt until the late 1970s.

Arnold and Newlin: Dortmund, May 1970

Before we head back to Denmark and Sweden, the final stop in West Germany is Dortmund. We see a building that looks as if it was patched from the bullet holes of World War II.

Arnold and Newlin: Heidelberg and Würzburg, May 1970

The next stop on our tour of West Germany is Heidelberg, followed by Würzburg, where we visit the Marienberg Fortress above the Main River.

Arnold and Newlin: Ulm and the Black Forest, May 1970

The first set of slides here are labeled Black Forest, where we stopped for a picnic. The second set are from Ulm, of Ulm Minster. The tour is getting close to the home of Hazel's German ancestors, who were Calvinist Protestants that emigrated to the Colony of Pennsylvania.

Arnold and Newlin: Linderhof, May 1970

When we visited Linderhof Palace, built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the Rococo style, there was still some May snow in the mountains. The first three slides with some snow were taken by Arnie; the rest are store-bought slides. The fountain was not running when we were there.

Arnold and Newlin: Oberammergau, May 1970

We spend the better part of a week in Oberammergau, shopping the tourist places, attending the final rehearsal performance of the Passion Play, and making side trips to Austria (next post) and Linderhof (upcoming post). Hazel enjoyed this part of our travel the most as it hit two highlights of of her life: her religion and her German ancestry. Oberammergau is renown for its Lüftlmalerei frescos and traditional wood carving. Hazel was thrilled to see the elaborate exterior of the Hotel Wolf there, reminding her of her cherished maiden name Wolfe.

The following photos are from our return to Uppsala, but I put them here because Hazel had bought each of us, including Arnie, a set of Lederhosen in Oberammergau; Newlin got a Dirndl instead. Joel used Allan and Arnie's Lederhosen in high school in the German Club for folk dancing in the early 1970s
