From our apartment at 3 Götgatan in Uppsala, our first outing was a drive to the Baltic Sea for a picnic.
Arnie worked in Professor Teorell's Lab. The Teorells invited us over for dinner one Sunday and surprised us Americans by serving wine to Allan and Joel. After that Arnie and Newlin relaxed their prohibition of wine for us teenagers so long as we sipped it at dinner.
Allan, Joel and Andrew were enrolled in local schools. Andrew and Joel attended Eriksskolan but walked down to Svekerskolan for Swedish language lessons with other foreigners (a Czech refugee and two Greek children). Allan attended Tiudaskolan, where Joel also had wood shop and crochet classes. Eric attended an outdoor preschool in a local park, which was only cancelled at -20C (-4F).

We frequently visited Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala), three miles from where we lived. Gamla Uppsala was the traditional home of the Yngling Viking kings and has three royal burial mounds from the Fifth Century. We were shock to learn that these mounds are not roped off but open to the public. In the winter it became a favorite place for us to go sledding.

Allan and Joel joined the Sea Scouts (Sjö Scouterna). On one Sea Scout outing to the countryside, Joel and Allan experienced falling snow for the first time.

Arnie befriended Mike Haynes, whose girlfriend came over from England. Later Mike had a sabbatical at the University of Florida and was a frequent visitor to our home in Gainesville.

Through Professor Teorell, Arnie and Newlin got invitations for the Nobel Award Banquet in Stockholm's City Hall. Newlin bought a gown for that ceremony and Arnie rented a tuxedo. Newlin said that she was asked to dance quite a bit because the university students were allowed to attend so long as they kept everyone dancing.
