In the summer of 1963 the family drives out West visiting a number of scenic points of interest, among which is Bryce Canyon. Newlin especially enjoyed western scenery, even as a youth reading the Zane Grey novels. Joel remembers traveling with a large thermos filled with ice and Kool Aid that got refilled every morning in the motel.

Arnie and Newlin had a harness for Andrew, nearly three years old and quite a bolter. With that harness they could rein him in when he ran toward a cliff or he could just pick up his feet when he was tired or playsome to be carried.
