In 1963 Newlin's nephew Guy Jr. came home to find his wife and her lover in bed. He shot and killed both. During the murder trial (he was found not guilty due to a crime of passion), his five children were farmed out to relatives. The two youngest, David and Betty, lived with us for part of that year. (Allan remembers that Betty came first but would not stop crying so he assumes that Richard was sent to keep her company and provide a familiar face.)
